Its unique features have made video a great engaging mean of communication on the web when compared to text, images or the combination of the two. It's the perfect blend of audio elements and graphics. 360º video is the latest and most powerful video marketing tool and a form of virtual reality. Now it is possible to create more immersive visual content that is able to engage the viewer in a way that no other marketing tool can. But after all what is the 360º video?
What are 360-degree videos?
360-degree videos, also known as immersive videos or spherical videos, are video recordings where a point of view is recorded in all directions - 360º. These recordings are made using an omnidirectional camera or a set of cameras. Then, during playback, the viewer controls the direction of the view as if it were in place. It is an audiovisual simulation of an altered, enlarged or replaced environment that surrounds the viewer, allowing him to look around in all directions, just as if he was on the actual location.
360-degree videos were created to allow users to interact with content instead of just being passive. They provide an engaging preview that allows each visitor to choose where to look. With 360º video, you can share the entire surrounding environment and make the experience immersive. When viewing a 360º video, on a mobile device you can change the viewpoint by moving the device or tapping the screen. This allows the addition of new dimensions to the consumer experience.
There are several types of 360-degree video, including live streaming or on demand, real-time 3D rendering, and CGI (Computer Graphics Imagery).
Although the hardware to create 360-degree video has existed for some years now, the technology to allow the user to have the viewing experience has only emerged very recently. Currently available 360º video consumption systems include Oculus Rift, Morpheus, HoloLens and Vive & Gear.
To watch 360º videos on YouTube or Facebook, you don’t need to use any display device, a mobile device or a computer is enough. That is, you can explore the video in all directions with a few simple gestures. On computers, you can click and drag with the mouse or click on the arrows in the upper left corner of the screen. On mobile devices, you can drag your finger across the screen or move it in different directions. However, the experience isn’t completely immersive like this, for better visualization you need to put your phone on a kind of "glasses", for example, Google Cardboard or Samsung Gear VR.
In March 2015, YouTube officially launched the possibility for users to view and upload 360-degree videos. Vimeo, another video hosting platform, launched 360-degree video support in March 2017. Google also announced a collaboration with camera makers to facilitate uploading of 360-degree content. Facebook has also added 360 video support in September 2015.
The future of video has arrived with innovative productions, experiential videos and different forms of immersion that have revolutionized traditional methods of recording and viewing video content. 360º video is an excellent strategic option to make your company stand out and to be associated with innovation and new trends.
